Squirrels are one of the most common mammals presented to rehabilitators for care in North America. The large majority of squirrels admitted to rehabilitation are juveniles, including neonates arriving at 15 grams. Many of those juveniles have health problems that may not be noticed by new rehabilitators until the problems worsen. Rehabilitation practices can also result in problems, such as aspiration pneumonia, diarrhea, and cage injuries.
This seminar provides extensive information about effectively rehabilitating
both juvenile and adult squirrels. Described as the most extensive squirrel
rehabilitation seminar available for rehabilitators in
North America, this
seminar has received excellent feedback from both new and experienced
rehabilitators. The seminar helps rehabilitators make care and release decisions based on the natural history of different tree and ground squirrels. It provides extensive information and photos on development stages of many species of squirrels to help make feeding, caging, and release decisions. Information on diet and nutrition, including milk-replacer formulas and rodent chows, feeding schedules and methods, and ways to prevent or resolve problems are presented. Capture and handling tips are demonstrated for infant, juvenile and adult squirrels. Common squirrel health problems are discussed (such as wounds, head trauma, diarrhea, aspiration pneumonia, and sibling nursing). Treatment options from both conventional and holistic medicine will be reviewed. Cage criteria and plans will be provided, and cage building will be demonstrated. Release criteria and methods will be described, as well as risk management techniques. Handbook: The newly expanded, 265 page Squirrel Rehabilitation Handbook is included with the seminar (a $40 value). The Handbook includes extensive sections on medical problems, urinary problems, gastrointestinal conditions and preventing aspiration. Participants also will receive extra charts to help determine age, feeding schedule, and formulas. Supplies: There will be displays of caging, supplies, and books. Special nesting baskets and feeding syringes for juvenile squirrels will be compared.
Presenters: Shirley and Allan Casey, have rehabilitated over 1,800 squirrels and worked with 22 species of squirrels since 1986, including Fox, Eastern Gray, Red, Abert’s, and many other species. They have presented dozens of training programs at national, regional, and state rehab conferences, including sessions on squirrel natural history, health, nutrition, and caging, as well as seminars on other wildlife topics. They have published on squirrel rehab in national rehab publications, as well on other wildlife related topics, and consult regularly on wildlife topics.
